Making of himmelis (geometric ornaments) is an ancient tradition in the Baltic Sea region. Himmelis were believed to bring luck. especially cereal and fertility luck, and therefore they were made for Christmas, Easter, weddings and other celebrations.
“Sun or Moon” box consists of 100 reed straws and You have to decide from two option – make a ball shape Moon (90 pcs, a bit more difficult) or icosahedron-based Sun (90 pcs, easier). There are about 10% more materials than you need for making figures showed in the manual.
Moon and Sun have the same diameter – 13.39″ (34 cm).
Description
The kit consists of:
– 100 reed straws
– linen thread
– copper wire hook
– instruction manual (in English, Finnish and Estonian)
The straws in this package are from common reed (Phragmites australis), which has grown on the western coast of Estonia and were collected for thatched roof builders. Later straws are sorted, cut and cleaned in our small family enterprise.
