Making of himmelis (geometric ornaments) is an ancient tradition in Baltic Sea region. Himmelis were believed to bring luck. especially cereal and fertility luck, and therefore they were made for Christmas, Easter, weddings and other celebrations.
Virumaa himmeli box consists of two different length reed straws (8 cm and 24 cm). You have to make 6 smaller octahedrons and tie them to the corners of a bigger octahedron.
Kit consists of:
– 100 reed straws
– linen thread
– copper wire hook
– instruction manual (in English, Finnish and Estonian)
The straws in this package are from common reed (Phragmites australis), which has grown on the western coast of Estonia and were collected for thatched roof builders. Later straws are sorted, cut and cleaned in our small family enterprise.
